What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is made of 2 Japanese words: “Rei” which means universal and “Ki” which means life force energy. This tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of well being. When the energy is blocked, dis-ease can occur in the body, mind or emotions. Reiki is applied through gentle healing touch which enhances the body’s natural healing ability to restore balance, provide deep relaxation and restore inner harmony.

What is Reiki Level 1?

Reiki level 1 is the first degree where one learns to heal themselves and also family and friends. The focus during Level 1 is on opening the energy channels on a physical level, allowing the individual to connect to the universal life force energy, which flows through the crown of the head and down to the heart and hands. This is a gentle introduction to the energy and as the focus is on self-healing it enables the person’s body to adjust to the energy and begin the process of clearing and rebalancing. Often this can signify an intense period of self-growth as old energy blockages are released especially if it is the person’s first introduction to any form of energy healing. It is for this reason that it is recommended to allow at least 3 months between Level 1 and Level 2 attunements. The Reiki attunement is what makes Reiki unique to other forms of healing touch and energy work. This ceremony, called Reiju (Ray-joo) in Japanese, opens and expands the main energy channels of the student’s body, allowing universal energy, also known as Ki, to flow more freely and deeply.

About the Teacher

Sharon Curran began her Reiki journey in 2003, training with Andrea Cygler. Reiki 1 truly was a personal journey of discovery for her and she spent a number of years focusing on her own self-healing before deciding to become a Practitioner in 2005. Whilst the tendency is to want to rush through the levels, Sharon is not an advocate of this approach. Time is needed between attunements to recalibrate and find balance with the new emerging energies and what they may bring. Sharon completed her Reiki Master Teacher training in 2019.
